A multilayer plasma-assisted CVD coating for oxidation protection of carbon-carbon composites

Plasma-assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition (PACVD) B4C/SiC coating and a multilayer PACVD (B4C/SiC) CVD (SiC/Si3N4) coating were deposited on a 2-D C-C substrate. Oxidation behavior of coated and uncoated C-C composites was studied using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) in both the isothermal and kinetic mode. The PACVD coating provided excellent oxidation protection of the C-C substrate at temperatures up to 950 degrees C, whereas the PACVD B4C/SiC CVD SiC/Si3N4 coating provided good oxidation protection at temperatures up to 1,400 degrees C. Coated composites were examined using SEM and optical microscopy. A correlation between coating microstructure and oxidation behavior is discussed.
