A new two-axis attitude sensor based on free pendulum inclinometer

摘要
This paper describes the design steps and tests of a new, low cost, attitude sensor called AGS. With digital features, it was proposed to control two axis attitude (pitch and roll) of the handpiece, in clinical procedures performed by dentists. Ergonomic and miniaturization requirements, besides precision and dynamic response, were some basic parameters of the design methodology adopted. The AGS controls handpiece and tool attitude in real time, without any constrains to the dentist hands movement. To avoid the traditional magnetic or viscous procedures disadvantages, a virtual digital damping system, based on a new software algorithm, provided the required sensor damping treatment. To test the AGS in clinical conditions, a group of dentists performed an abutment preparation test. The results using AGS, compared with normal preparations procedures, have showed a clear reduction in angular deviations from the reference guiding planes.
