Presidential candidates speak out in Kappan

In this review of material from theKappanarchive, Teresa Preston looks back at the magazine's coverage of past presidential elections. Every four years, from 1980 through 2012,Kappansought to inform readers of candidates' positions on key education issues. Typically, this involved publishing pieces by each of the major candidates detailing their positions, alongside an article by a freelance writer putting the candidates' positions into context. In September 1984, writer George Kaplan explored the limited role of the president in education. In their own papers, candidates touted their achievements in past office and, regardless of party, expressed strong support for teachers and schools.
