Publishing technologies:: Towards a wider concept of documents and related issues

Our concept of a document is perhaps modeled and certainly highly dependent on our previous experience. This experience is mainly derived from dealing with printed documents. However, in the past decade, "electronic documents" have become a predominant focus of attention. But even with electronic documents, the "resemblance" to paper is still evident. In this chapter I want to express some of the critical issues that are related to this. Before going into more depth with some of those issues, I would like to explain my concept of a document.
