Laser revision is now the preferred method of treatment for various scars. The initial classification of scar type is important to ensure that the proper laser system is used. The 585 nm pulsed-dye laser can ameliorate hypertrophic scars, keloids, erythematous scars, and striae, with low risk of adverse sequelae. Use of the pulsed and scanned carbon dioxide and Er:YAG lasers should be reserved for atrophic scars of the face and not for proliferative lesions such as keloids.
