This paper reports a laboratory test method that measures the characteristics of cleanable filter media for pulse-jet collector applications. The test simulates the cleaning process in a pulse-jet collector and measures the residual pressure drop that develops with repeated cleaning. The test apparatus employs a fluidized bed dust generator integrated with the test duct. When the filter is cleaned, the dislodged dust returns to the fluidized bed. Therefore, the test can be run continuously for a long period of time with minimal attention (>7 days). The size distribution measured by an impactor showed that the fluidized bed de-agglomerated the dust particles adequately. Furthermore, the size distribution and concentration did not change substantially over time. Several cleanable media were compared. Their final residual pressure drops were 400 to 900 Pa, depending on the structure of the filter, the type of dust, and the cleaning mode. Since the residual pressure drops increased very gradually, it is recommended that a sufficiently large number of cleaning cycles be made for such measurements.
