The cosmology of flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universes dominated by a single scalar field is discussed. General features of the evolution of the universe and the scalar field are illustrated by specific examples. It is shown that in some situations the most important contribution to inflation comes from the approach to a region of slow roll, rather than from the period of leaving a slow-roll regime.
