Retinal damage by laser pointer

Case report. I examined a patient with a macular injury in right eye caused by a laser pointer, which had been sold as a plaything. The visual acuity in this eye was severely reduced for about 2 months after the accident. This macular injury took a shape of neovascular maculopathy with choroidal neovascularization (CNV). This macular damage by laser pointer was called as Laser pointer maculopathy. Some laser pointers producing more than 5.0 mw are being sold illegally. These Laser pointers may cause severe macular damage if abused. These devices should be legally restricted.
