POETRY AND ASTROLOGY IN ARAUCO DOMADO (1596) BY PEDRO DE ONA

This paper studies the presence of astrology in Arauco domado, a theme not included in La Araucana of Ercilla, and a true innovation within the colonial epic poetry canon. In Canto II of Arauco domado, Oria introduces an astrological scene, bringing back the most famous astrological predictions in epic poetry: Lucan's Pharsalia. Canto II of Arauco domado is, undoubtedly, another example of the importance of astrology and its influence on the authors of Spanish Golden Age on both sides of the Atlantic.
