Assessing driver visual interaction with new display technologies

The development of new emerging technologies to present vehicle and road information both effectively and efficiently to the driver needs to be appropriately assessed. This is to ensure that these technologies accomplish their stated aims in an appropriate manner which does not overload the driver either cognitively or perceptually. Typically part of such assessment examines the visual attentional capabilities of the driver, by measuring visual search behaviour, when driving with these systems as compared to equivalent situations without them. The rationale for this is reviewed, different eye movement recording techniques discussed and this approach assessed.
