Application of neutron radiography as method in the analysis of wood A non-destructive method is described applicable for the investigation of inner defects and especially the description of the moisture distribution in wooden samples, based on the transmission with neutrons. Contrary to the application of x- or gamma ray, neutrons have a high sensitivity in hydrogen detection. In this way, it becomes possible to measure the naturally hydrogen content in wood and to prove changes in the wood wetness. This process can be analysed quantitatively in its local and time dependent development. The method can be used for the check of the value of waterproofing liquids or coatings, the localisation of inner defects and failures as well as generally for the description of moisture transport in wood.
