Gastrointestinal Bleeding Caused by Meckel's Diverticulum: A Diagnostic Challenge

A 39 year old patient presented with a history of fresh blood per rectum and anemia. No source of bleeding was found when performing the usual imaging techniques. The findings of a wireless videocapsule enteroscopy led to the supicion of Crohns disease in the small intestine. An oral glucocorticoid steroid therapy was started and budenoside was given. A repeat wireless videocapsule endoscopy revealed the high suspicion of a Meckel's diverticulum in the small intestine. A double-balloon enteroscopy was then performed which confirmed the suspected diagnosis. The patient was treated surgically. Pathogenesis and problems in diagnosing an adult Meckel's diverticulum are discussed.
