Fatigue crack growth mechanisms of long and small cracks were investigated in cast and wrought aluminum alloys, titanium alloys and gray irons with various microstructures resulting from changes in heat treatment and chemistry. Microstructural effects on the fatigue crack growth response of each material were evaluated. Long crack growth data were generated on compact tension specimens tested at low, intermediate and high stress ratios (R=0.1, R=0.5 and R=0.7). Small crack growth testing was performed on corner and surface flaw tension specimens at low stress ratio, R=0.1. Fatigue crack growth mechanisms with and without crack closure were identified. Corrective techniques compensating for closure and microstructural effects on fatigue crack growth data will be presented and discussed.
