Gastrointestinal tract effects of Securidaca longepedunculata root extract

A methanol extract of the root of Securidaca longepedunculata has shown spasmodic actions on rite gastrointestinal tract of laboratory animals. An increase in the propulsive movements of the intestinal contents, its well as a reduction in gastric emptying time, was produced by the extract. The number of wet faeces was increased in mis after oral administration Preliminary studies on isolated guinea-pig ileum showed that the extract evoked contractions which were blocked by atropine. At a high dose. the extract produced ulcerations on gastric mucosa and small intestine.
