摘要
The reduction in fibre swelling after repeated drying and rewetting has been investigated in situ by means of confocal microscopy. Swelling is assumed to be caused by two phenomena, the displacement of morphological features in the fibre cell and submorphological swelling caused by bound water. Based on the results for wet-imaged fibre cross-sections, the more often fibres were dried and rewetted, the greater the reduction in swelling. In contrast, no change was observed for the results of dry-imaged fibres. It was concluded that fibre drying causes a loss in reswelling due to submorphological changes in the fibre wall.
