摘要
Fossil fuel-based power plants are rapidly being replaced by renewable sources worldwide to address global warming and climate change issues. Due to the non-dispatchable nature of renewable sources, their massive implementation is causing damping and stability problems in electric power systems. On the other hand, with rapidly declining battery costs, battery energy storages are now becoming an integral part of modern power systems, especially those with a high penetration of renewable sources. A power system with embedded battery energy storage has the potential to improve the damping of the system. This paper proposes a method of enhancing the damping of a simple power system by properly controlling the battery output power following a disturbance or during power swing oscillations. The paper demonstrates, both theoretically and through simulations, that the battery storage system can play an important role in improving the damping of a power system.
