Project-based learning: improving student engagement and performance in the laboratory

摘要
Incorporation of problem-based or project-based laboratories is a potential solution to the problem of lack of motivation and engagement among students working in laboratories. Incorporation of problem-based or project-based laboratories is a potential solution as these types of laboratory experiences require students to independently work through the steps necessary to answer a real-world question such as 'did the athlete take performance enhancing drugs?'. A systematic teaching method that engages students in learning essential knowledge and life enhancing skills through an extended, student-influenced inquiry process structured around complex, authentic questions and carefully designed products and tasks. Several aspects of this method address the challenge of motivating students to perform at their highest level while engaging them in the process of learning.
