摘要
In this introduction to the 'Experiments in Narrative' section, Robert A. Rosenstone explains why he moved away from traditional third-person narrative and into a present tense, multi-voiced, self-reflexive form for his book Mirror in the Shrine. He argues that in his case, it was the only way to fully explore the historical situation he was describing--the experience of American sojourner in nineteenth century Japan. He points to other cases of innovative historical narrative and suggests what are the benefits of choosing to use such experimental forms.
