EDUCATION AS THE CORNERSTONE KNOWLEDGE-BASED ECONOMY

Due to the expanding globalization, leading to the unification of the world market, question of competitiveness of individual countries has become a discussed topic. The development of the knowledge-based economy affects competitiveness criteria. One of the basic units of knowledge-based economy is education, which is also a part of the competitiveness of economies fuelled by fundamental factors and efficiency. Contribution aims to compare the achieved level of the education system (based on the study of the OECD PISA) with selected determinants of the knowledge economy: government spending on education, the number of graduates of tertiary level of education in science and technology and human resources in science and technology sector.
