Determination of shear wave velocity in Bender Element Test

Determination of travel time as shear wave propagates through a soil element is an underlying problem for obtaining the correct value of pseudo-elastic shear modulus (G(max)) by using thin soil sample in the laboratory. A series of laboratory bender element (BE) test by using two different input wave shapes over a wide range of frequency was performed on two kinds of clays, both reconstituted in the laboratory. Sinusoidal wave input, rather than square-wave shape resulted in clearer and more distinctive: signals at reception. In the former case, conclusions regarding 'correct travel time' that is relatively stable, distinct and is scarcely affected by frequency are drawn. The recommended travel time is also related to square-shaped wave case, stating the new approach of measurement. The degree of variation in travel time measurement, which ultimately results in the G(max) change, are also described by comparing with other existing approaches.
