This paper describes a digital pulse width modulator (PWM) with pulse dithering, using a delta-sigma modulator (DSM) as a first stage. Dithering of the PWM pulses spreads harmonic noise in the frequency spectrum related to the PWM fundamental frequency. Simulation shows a reduction in the peak energy of about 10dB at the harmonic frequencies compared to that of conventional PWM. This circuit has applications in power circuits where electromagnetic radiation or conduction of harmonic noise is a problem.
