摘要
The 'problem' of German wartime suffering has been contentious since the mid-1980s and the Historikerstreit. Conservatives have presented Germans as the victims of Nazism or Allied vengefulness to relativize German crimes and promote national identity. The left has tried to maintain its hegemony over the past with the 'Crimes of the Wehrmacht' exhibition and its support for Daniel Goldhagen's indictment of German anti-Semitism. Treichel's Der 'Verlorene' complicates any attempt to instrumentalize German suffering. It balances a critique of the wartime generation's self-stylization as victims with an examination of the generation of 1968 and its refusal to acknowledge German losses.
