In recent decades mobility has steadily increased in all levels of the population. More leisure time and holidays, low-price flights, increasing offers of sea cruises and also the desire to come into contact with foreign countries and cultures, lead continuously more people not only to European vacation resorts, but also to faroff destinations where medical care may be very limited. More and more children join their parents on such travels. Interestingly, while the topic of travel medicine is a relevant issue in the research of adults, only few publications exist about travelling children and research is almost lacking for this age group. In this article some aspects of pediatric travel medicine are highlighted, including questions of hygiene, water and food supply, infection prophylaxis, sun protection and medical treatment in case of becoming ill are discussed. Factors contributing to the well-being of children when on a trip are described. Furthermore, other aspects, such as flight suitability and high-altitude stays are dealt with. Finally, a suggestion for a pediatric first-aid kit is provided. Together with the other three articles in this issue, relevant information is provided to pediatricians, so that they are able to properly counsel families travelling with children.
