An environmentally friendly vertical drain, Fibredrain, developed using natural jute and coir fibre is reported in this paper. Basic properties of the drain and the site details of a recent field project in Japan where its satisfactory field performance was extensively monitored are given. Monitoring of piezometers installed within Fibredrain showed negligible well resistance and adequate discharge capacity. In the light of these results, field safety factor for Fibredrain in relation to installation, deformation, clogging and kinking is shown to be adequate, which explains its satisfactory performance in all projects it has been used.
