Piezoelectric fans vibrating in a fluid are encountered in numerous aeronautical applications like flapping wings of micro air vehicles (MAVs). In this work, the aerodynamic damping of a piezoelectric fan is studied to predict the effect of the surrounding air in the vacuum and ambient conditions. The resonant frequency and damping values are computed at different oscillation amplitudes in both vacuum and ambient conditions. Vibration measurements were done using a Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (SLDV). We show that the aerodynamic damping has a nonlinear behavior at different oscillation amplitudes of the piezofan.
