Vasovagal syncope and risk factors for atherosclerosis - An epidemiological analysis

We retrospectively analysed 312 patients with syncope. In 151 (48,9%) we recognised vasaovagal syndrome (VVS). Age, sex, and prevalence of hypertension, diabetes and coronary artery disease were judged. We stated that VVS patients were younger than with other patients with faints 38,2+/-3.1 vs 44.7+/-2,7 years of age (p<0,02). Besides we noticed among patients with different types of VVS statistically significant changes regarding to the age: mixed comparison to cardioinhibitory VVS - 41,7+/-4,7 vs 31,5+/-5.5 (p=0.01); cadioinhibitory to vasodepepresor VVS - 31,5+/-5.5 vs 42,9+/-10,1 (p<0,05); mixed to vasodepresor VVS - 41,7+/-4,7 vs 42,9+/-10,1 (p=ns). There was no correlation between the sex, prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease and particular types of syncope. We concluded that differences in age in patients with syncopal episodes may be partly use for predicting etiology of loss of consciousness.
