The use of complex vectors in the study of orientational order in liquid crystals

摘要：
It is shown that a complex vector can be used instead of the director, which describes the structure of a uniaxial nematic liquid crystal. This vector may be specified both locally and globally even in a system with disclinations. It is proposed to use complex vectors for studying biaxial nematics, cholesterics, and blue phases of liquid crystals.
