Breeding of Glaucidium brasilianum (Gmelin 1788) in the urban environment of Uberlandia, State of Minas Gerais

Breeding of Glaucidium brasilianum (Gmelin 1788) in the urban environment of Uberlandia, State of Minas Gerais. A reproductive event of Glaucidium brasilianum (Gmelin, 1788) was accompanied in a nest located in the Campus Umuarama (18 degrees 53'01 '' S, 48 degrees 15'34 '' W) of the Federal University of Uberlandia, Uberlandia, State of Minas Gerais. The observations were carried out from September 7th to January 9th, 2007, in a total of 200 observation hours. The nest was found a tree of Spathodea campanulata Beauv. (Bignoniaceae). It was an abandoned nest of Colaptes melanochloros (woodpecker), situated at four meters above ground. The observations were carried out daily at a distance of approximately seven meters, with binoculars (10 x 50 mm). The information regarding the reproductive behavior of the species was registered. Mating behavior was started on September 7th, when the male offered a prey (a bird) to the female. Three sexual intercourse events were registered in the following days. The female incubated the eggs during approximately 30 days. The male did not participate in the incubation process. However, it watched the nest and defended it against attacks. After the hatching, three nestlings stayed in the nest for 25 days. This reproductive event shows that G. brasilianum uses successfully the urban area for its reproduction.
