Residual stress and its effect on corrosion behaviour of butt jointed Cu-Al alloys

摘要
Residual stresses in dissimilar metal joints of copper and aluminium alloys have been measured using an X-ray diffraction technique and estimated by finite element analysis. The effects of local tensile and compressive residual stresses in the joints on corrosion in artificial seawater have been investigated, using a potentiodynamic polarisation method. Galvanic corrosion at the dissimilar metal weld region may be enhanced by the additional effect of differential stress induced by welding.
