摘要
Epidemiological findings based on diagnostic subtypes and symptom syndromes of depression point to the need and opportunities for treating elders with depression. Geriatric psychiatry has the necessary skills to respond to this challenge. However, the nature and extent of these opportunities are clarified when an explicit language reflecting need for relief of affective suffering is introduced. The underlying principles and value of such a language are demonstrated by use of the Index of Affective Suffering.
