A values-based intervention model for team building is presented. Values are defined as core beliefs that guide behavior, form the basis for goal setting and motivation, and serve as standards to evaluate behavior. Rationale for understanding individual values within the team building process is provided. Assumptions and components of the model are outlined with an emphasis on (1) increasing awareness of individual characteristics from a values perspective; (2) understanding the predominant Values of the team; (3) identifying the factors that promote and interfere with team cohesion from a values perspective; and (4) developing interventions and strategies to improve mutual respect and subsequent cohesion. Cautions and limitations of the model are noted.
