FACILITATING KNOWLEDGE DEVELOPMENT AND REFINEMENT IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHERS

摘要
Although much has been written about mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) and many studies have been done to document teachers' MKT, the literature contains few examples of efforts to enhance teachers' MKT. In this paper I provide examples of middle grades teachers' mathematical knowledge for teaching in the area of geometry with particular attention to their knowledge of content and students (KCS) and their knowledge of content and teaching (KCT). Then I describe an activity I have used with preservice teachers, called task dialogues, to enhance their KCS and KCT. Preliminary evidence of the effectiveness of the task dialogues is provided.
