Primary thoracic spinal hemangiopericytoma: case report

Hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is the angioblastic form of meningioma. Primary thoracic spinal hemangiopericytomas are extremely rare tumors. We present a case of a primary thoracic spinal HPC. A 61-year-old man presented with acute weakness of the lower extremities. Magnetic resonance imaging of his spine revealed a T11 intradural extramedullary lesion that displaced the cord to the left. Tumor was resected totally. Pathological examination was reported as HPC. Postoperatively, neurological examination of patient was normally, and he continued to do so with physical therapy. The standart treatment for HPC is complete surgical resection. Histopathological examination is essential to the diagnosis. Despite surgical resection, there is risk of recurrence. Therefore, patients should be followed up closely by their physicians with serial postoperative clinical examinations and radiographic imaging.
