摘要
Researchers and educators must be able to talk each other's languages and understand and respect each other's expertise to combine their talents to improve schools. This article explores some of-the barriers to the establishment of working relationships between sociologists and educators; the ways in which sociologists of education can participate in linking research, policy, and practice; and changes that are needed to increase sociologists' participation in educational reform. Three requirements for productive connections are discussed: multilingualism; mutual respect; and professional preparation and support, including university programs to prepare sociologists of education to understand and work with schools. These components should strengthen the discipline and increase the likelihood that schools will be improved and the success of students will be promoted.
