This paper quantifies the welfare cost of monopolistic competition in a human-capital-based endogenous growth model with analytical solution. For conservative calibrations, it is shown that this welfare cost may be 2% of consumption, well beyond conventional estimates. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
