摘要
Welding is widely used for construction of many structures. It is well known that residual stress is formed on welded joints. Tensile residual stress on the surface degrades fatigue strength. Some methods for reduction of residual stress such as heat treatment and peening are used. In this paper, a new method for reduction of residual stress is proposed. In this method, ultrasonic vibration is used during welding. First, the reduction in residual stress is examined by simulation using an analytical model. From the simulation, it is demonstrated how tensile residual stresses near the bead are reduced when ultrasonic vibration is used during welding. Next, the proposed method is examined experimentally. Two thin plates are butt-welded using ultrasonic vibration during welding. When ultrasonic vibration is used during welding, tensile residual stress is reduced near the bead.
