摘要
Wood treating operations produce a large quantity of process water containing organic and inorganic chemicals during their treatment cycle. Various flocculants are used for the treatment of contaminated wastewater before the water is discharged or sent for further treatment. In this study, five commercial polymeric flocculants were evaluated for the treatment of wood-preservative contaminated process water. The wastewater contained high levels of oil and grease, suspended solids, petroleum hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with creosote, pentachlorophenol (PCP), and chromated copper arsenate (CCA). Analyses of selected PAHs revealed that all five flocculants removed more than 85% of the total selected PAHs with similar results. The PCP results varied from 89% to 98% removal. Significant reduction of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), total suspended solids (TSS), oil and grease, copper, chromium and arsenic were also observed for all treatments.
