Comparison of magnetic moment and magnetostriction of Gd3Ga5O12 and Tb3Ga5O12 single crystals

摘要
The magnetization (M) and magnetostriction of Gd2Ga5O12 (GGG) and Tb3Ga5O12 (TGG) garnets were investigated in magnetic field (H) up to 14 T at several fixed temperatures from 2.4 K to 40 K. S-state of the Gd3+ ion results in a simple, typical for almost free ion, M(H) and magnetic entropy dependences of the GGG single crystal. Its magnetostriction is proportional to square of the magnetic moment that points to the importance of the exchange interactions. F-state of the Tb3+ ion is responsible for complicated dependencies of the magnetization, magnetic entropy and magnetostriction of TGG single crystal. For H parallel to [110] the Zeeman effect produced crossing of the energy levels at H = 9.5 T was seen as peculiarities of the magnetization, magnetic entropy and magnetostriction. Crystal electric field based theory of the magneto-elastic coupling in TGG may be refined with this new experimental data. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
