Surface pretilt effects of bistable twisted nematic liquid crystal display

Electrooptical properties of a bistable twisted nematic liquid crystal display are studied as a factor of surface pretilt angle. It is shown experimentally that the selection voltage decreased and the maximum transmittance increased as the surface pretilt angle is increased. These effects can be explained by the backflow effect and the stabilities of 0 degrees and 360 degrees twisted states upon changing the surface pretilt angle.
