Nonlinear switching using long-period gratings in AS2Se3 chalcogenide fiber

We present detailed experimental and numerical analyses of nonlinear all-optical switching in long-period gratings (LPGs) in AS(2)Se(3) chalcogenide fiber. We characterize the nonlinear propagation of picosecond pulses through the LPG and observe nonlinear switching at optical peak powers around 55 W. This is 2 orders of magnitude lower than previously demonstrated in silica fibers, owing to the very strong Kerr nonlinearity in As(2)Se(3) chalcogenide glass. The results are discussed in the context; of applications in passively mode-locked lasers and all-optical regenerators. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.
