Energy and social development are unbreakably interlinked. For society to develop, energy is needed. However, there is a flip-side to this: Lack of adequate energy almost always implies poverty. Combatting energy poverty, therefore, is part of a bigger development picture. It is not only about changing living conditions, but also about providing the foundations for future growth. In order for this to happen there are three elements - or pieces - that must come together. The pieces are energy, industry and governance. The question is whether they can be shaped so that they fit - and work - together. I believe they can; and that is my vision for a sustainable energy future.
