The exact stability region of the MacCormack scheme for the scalar advection equation

This note announces that the stability region of the MacCormack scheme for the scalar advection equation u(t) = au(x) + bu(y) is exactly given by (a Delta(t)/Delta(x))(2/3) + (b Delta(t)/Delta(y))(2/3) less than or equal to 1 where Delta(t), Delta(x) and Delta(y) are the grid distances. This improves upon the result obtained by Wendroff [1] and corrects a mistake in it.
