摘要
The recent heightened interest in the field of epigenetics has led to the notion that the epigenome of a cell is as important as its genome in defining cellular identity. Proper gene expression is also strongly regulated and controlled at a post-transcriptional level, including RNA maturation, quality control, and nuclear export. In particular, a strict quality control process guarantees that the vast majority of mRNA exported to the cytoplasm is correct to avoid abnormal and eventually deleterious protein production. In eukaryotes, mRNA biogenesis in the nucleus and translation into proteins in the cytoplasm are physically separated by the nuclear envelope, which ensures and controls molecular exchanges between the nucleus and the cytoplasm through a specialized and evolutionary conserved structure, the nuclear pore complex.
