Interaction between Lean Construction and the working method BIM using the example of application of visualization and modelling of the construction process

In the planning and execution of construction projects, two superior approaches for the holistic optimization of the construction process have been established. Using Lean Construction and Building Information Modeling (BIM) is intended to improve the whole process on a sustainable basis. Currently in Germany, the two approaches are mainly considered and applied independently. However, similarities and common aspects are existing so that a combined application seems to be useful and could lead to a holistic improvement of the construction process. For a combined application, the interfaces and similarities should be presented and examined previously. For this purpose, a research project at the Institute of Construction Management, University of Stuttgart, has been drawn up which analyzed the difficulties and examined the interfaces and synergies with regard to a combined application of the two approaches. The interfaces and synergies have been determined by an international literature analysis. In the present article, the primary results of the study "Interaction between Lean Construction and the working method BIM" are presented. In this article, the focus lies on the interfaces between Lean Construction and the two BIM applications visualization and modelling of the construction process. The findings of the interface analysis indicate that many BIM applications are consistent with the goals, tools and principles of Lean Construction. Based on this analysis, a phase model is determined which suggests a strategical application of both approaches for the entire planning and construction process. This model can serve decision-makers as a clearly arranged tool for the development of an integrated BIM-Lean process.
