Modern Catalan translation grew at the turn of the 20th century. The upward trend remained intact until 1939. Franco's dictatorship did everything possible to destroy this tradition. However, translation survived in several ways, and some translators, along with some publishers, prescribed what they considered must be imported from the foreign literature.
