Simultaneous bilateral extracapsular cataract extraction

The safety and effectiveness of simultaneous bilateral extracapsular cataract extraction were investigated in a retrospective review of 211 consecutive patients (422 eyes). Patients underwent bilateral extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber Ions implantation in one operative session using general endotracheal anesthesia. The procedures were treated as 2 separate operations. The complication rate was 3.3% intraoperatively and 15.4% postoperatively, No major bilateral complications occurred. Final visual acuity was 6112 or better in 70% of eyes.
