Anaphylaxis is the most urgent and potentially the most significant condition evaluated and managed by allergists. Exercise-induced anaphylaxis (EIA) is a clinical syndrome in which anaphylaxis occurs in conjunction with exercise or significant physical exertion. Patients must be instructed in proper self-administration of epinephrine and should be ready to treat EIA promptly, should signs and symptoms occur. It is probably most prudent for a patient with EIA to exercise with a companion apprised of the patient's condition and instructed in the treatment of anaphylaxis, including the administration of epinephrine.
