The European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) is a survey of 4 main regions of the sky at 15 and 90 mu m. The follow-up programmes from the ground are summarized. We present preliminary results from near-infrared (K-band) observations in the southern ELAIS fields. We show the histogramme distribution of the K-band magnitude for all objects in the observed regions. The "stellarity" index derived from the source extraction is also shown. We roughly find that 2/3 of the objects detected in the fields are elongated (i.e. galaxies). For a small sample of ISOPHOT detections, the corresponding NIR sources are classified as follows: a) 20% of stars: b) 70% of galaxies and c) 10% of interacting systems.
