Pore characteristic determination with mercury porosimetry in polyester staple yarns

摘要
There are several methods of testing porosity and relevant quantities such as pore size,pore size distribution, pore diameter etc. The intra-yarn porosity of polyesler staple yarns with different cross-section shapes has been studied in this paper using mercury porosimetry, a technique which is wide-spread in the paper industry which we have now extended by us now to textile technology. This method provided pore size distribution in yarn bundles and revealed two readily recognizable and one more specific pore radius per yarn type. The results turned out to be almost the same for each case, although the yarn composed of cruciform fibers showed the most and largest pores. The measurement curves could be analyzed with the help of theoretical considerations. The theoretically filled curves separated the three different distribution functions that belong to the three characteristic radii and made it possible to study them one by one. in this way the applicability of mercury porosimetry in determining the pore size of fibrous structures was proven, both in practice and with the help of the theoretical approach.
