摘要
We report the observation of nonreciprocal magnetoelectric x-ray scattering (MEXS) in globally centrosymmetric crystal of magnetite (Fe3O4). At the (222) Bragg reflection, resonant MEXS was observed around the pre-edge region of Fe K absorption. This unique scattering, being distinct from conventional magnetic or charge scattering, originates from an interference between electric dipole and electric quadrupole E1-E2 transition matrix elements at the spinel A site with locally broken inversion symmetry (T-d). The present results imply the possible application of MEXS to a broad class of materials with locally lacking inversion symmetry.
